Math

We learn lots of things in math in first grade! Here are a few of the topics that we cover in first grade:

Skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

Identify halves, thirds and fourths of a whole

Addition and subtraction for sums up to 20 (This includes word problems and using words, pictures and numbers to explain how to solve these problems.)

Extend a given pattern

Recognize the following 2D shapes: circle, rectangle, triangle trapezoid, and rhombus

Recognize the following 3D shapes: sphere, rectangular prism, cylinder and pyramid

Read calendar to identify day and date

Measuring using various objects (ex. Measuring a piece of paper with paper clips.  We do not use rulers for measuring in 1st grade.)

Represent data using pictures and bar graphs

Tell time to the nearest hour and half hour using digital and analog clocks

Count money to fifty cents, including quarters and half dollars (This includes recognizing and telling the worth of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.)

The last two things, money up to fifty cents and time to the hour and half hour, are the most difficult for first graders to understand.  These would be excellent things to work on at home!
